What will I learn to do?

For some articles, you may have extra information that you want to make available to your readers.

This might be text documents used in reporting the story, text that is too long to include in the body of the article, or sound (audio) files.

AUDIENCE VIEW

It will look like this when you’re done – the rectangle indicates the attachment.

This lesson will show you how to attach documents, sound recordings or other types of files to your articles. After seeing the demonstration, you will have a chance to try it yourself.

You will also learn how to add a second attachment and how to delete an attached document.

BEST PRACTICE

Why would I do this?

You attach a document or sound file so the audience can see or hear for themselves the sources of information that the story is based on. This builds the audience’s trust in your site.

Additional material also allows those in the audience who are especially interested in this topic to easily learn more. This provides more details, a service to the audience.

When you attach a sound file, you offer additional sensory details and a richer experience. This makes the article more interesting to your audience.

For example, an editor might want to include the full text of a report, a spreadsheet of a budget for a government ministry, a recorded interview with a source, or sounds from a news event, such as demonstrators chanting.

INSIDE VIEW

You’ve just created and saved an article. You arrive at the Article page.

- At the lower right corner of the article page, there’s a box “Attach a document”
- Click the Browse…. button

Upload dialogue box opens.

DID YOU KNOW?

When you attach a file, you send a copy of it from your computer to your site.
It is assigned a number, and this copy is then available to your audience all the time.

The original stays on your computer. So be careful that, if you change the original document or file, the copy on your site does NOT change! If you want your audience to access the updated document, you then have to delete the old file and upload the new one.

- Locate the file you want to attach
- Click on the file
- Click the Open button
- Click the Upload button
The uploaded file appears

DEMONSTRATION

Attach a document to the article

You can use the file for more than one story.

CAUTION

Depending on your browser, it may happen that the uploaded file does not appear on the page, whereas the upload is completed; if so, you just have to refresh the page and the file you uploaded will be visible on your Article page
