What will I learn to do?

For some articles, you may have one or more images that are related to the content. This might be a photo showing the news event, or a graphic that illustrates an idea or information in the article. You’ll want the image to appear in the text of the article.

AUDIENCE VIEW

This lesson will show the steps to attach an image when you create or edit an article.

Then you will have a chance to try the steps yourself.

You will also learn how to position a photo in the article.

Finally, you will see how to add a second image, and how to delete an attached image.

Why would I attach an image?

When you attach an image, you offer a more colorful story and additional details that may be difficult to describe in words. This makes the article more interesting to your audience.

Images also let the audience see for themselves the events described in the article. This builds the audience’s trust in your site.

If you attach a graphic illustration, it can also help your readers who understand information better through pictures than words. This provides higher comprehension of the topic.

BEST PRACTICE

Format and sizing of images

You can attach photos, graphics or any image with the following formats:
- .jpg
- .png
- .gif
However, SPIP cannot handle the .tif format.

You should make sure that your file names end with an extension indicating their format (.gif, .jpg or .png). If you upload a file with a missing extension in its name, the system will not be able to use the image.

The size of the photo you upload is the size that it will appear on the page. So, before you upload, make sure you have cropped and reduced the size using a photo editing program.
A typical width of a photo for an online article is about 200 pixels.

First, watch the steps

You’ve just created an article.

CAUTION

You must save your article at least once before you can add a photo to it

- Save the article
You are at the Article page
- Click “Modify this article”

INSIDE VIEW

In the upper left corner of the Modify article page, there’s an “add an image” box.

- Click the Browse button
The Upload dialogue box opens
- Click on the file you want to attach
- Click the Open button
- Click the Upload button

This puts a copy of the file onto the server of your site.

Just above the image title, the width and height of your image (in pixels) are displayed. A preview of your image appears. If the image is more than 200 pixels wide, a thumbnail view or an icon of the image is displayed instead.

DID YOU KNOW?

When you attach an image, you send a copy of it from your computer to your site.
This copy is then available to your audience all the time.

The original stays on your computer. So be careful that, if you change the original image, the copy on your site does NOT change! If you want your audience to access the updated image, you then have to delete the old file and upload the new one.

DEMONSTRATION

Add an image to the article

You can also use the image again, with another article.
