What will I learn to do?
The links and footnotes will look like this when you’re done – they have rectangles around them in these illustrations.

Articles on Web sites are often brief. They offer the reader a taste of information.
By offering links to other articles on your site, and elsewhere on the Web, you can give your audience an easy way to learn more.
In this lesson, you will learn to create links to internal and external Web pages within articles.

You will also learn how to add footnotes and other references to articles.
And you will see how to delete links or unlink pages.
First, watch the steps

You are logged in as an editor, and you have created and saved an article.
You want to add a link to an external web site.
Before you add the link, go to the site you want to link to and copy the URL from the browser. Then you can just paste it into the link field of the dialogue box.
To prepare, note down the URL [the web address] for the external site.

You are at the Article page.
Click on “Modify this article”
The Modify page loads.
In the text field, select the words that you want to convert to a link
These words do NOT have to be the name of the site.
Click the “link” icon
A window opens
Type the full URL for the external site you want to link to. Be sure to include http:// or the link won’t work properly!
Click "OK"
You will see coding and the URL appear within the brackets around the words for the link.
Click "Save"
In the preview, you can see the link. Click on it to check that it works.
Create external links
How do I create a link to another article on my SPIP site?
If you want to add a link to an earlier story on your SPIP site, you can just follow the same steps!
You should first make sure you know the Article Number of the earlier story you would like to link to. Note it down.
In the text field, select the words that you want to convert to a link
Click the “link” icon

Type the number of the article
Click "OK"
Click “Save”
The preview shows the link. You can click on it to check that it works.
Create internal links
Why would I link to another article on the same SPIP site?
You cannot assume that everyone has read all of the articles on your site.
You might want to give the reader background information from an earlier article.
You also could point your reader to a related story in another section that he might have missed. You will interest the reader in the rest of your site.
Pointing to other articles may add to your credibility if you have authors who are experts on the subject.
