What will I learn to do?
An important feature of SPIP is that you can use many different languages, such as English, Spanish, Arabic, Russian, Sanskrit, Chinese...

It is easy to use more than one language on your SPIP website: for instance, it is possible to manage articles in one language and news in another one, or to link an article to its translation(s).
Thanks to the multilingual feature, you can attract visitors from many places in the world, thus enlarging your audience !
In this lesson, you will learn how to make it possible to use several languages on your website.
It includes:
See and change the main language of your site
Enable the multilingual menu for articles and/or sections
Set a language for a section
Enable the link between one article and its translation(s)
The languages of your site have no impact on the one you choose in your personal preferences, for your private area.
You can manage articles in English and Turkish, still working on SPIP in Arabic!
How can I see and change the main language of my site ?

If you want to change the main language of your SPIP site:

Roll over the Configuration icon
In the contextual menu, click on Language management
The Configuration page of the site’s languages opens
Use the drop down menu to select the language you want
If your language isn’t available in SPIP, you can offer to translate it.
To learn more, see the page http://www.spip.net/en_article2334.html and (for French speakers) join the discussion list at spip-trad@rezo.net. There are tools to assist in the quick translation of files.
Click on Submit
That’s it!
Change the main site language
The choice affects all your website; still
it does not constraint your articles or sections to be written in any language you want if you activate the related features.
This is what you are going to learn in the rest of the lesson!
How can I enable multilingual menu for articles?

To enable the multilingual menu for articles:
Roll over the Configuration icon
In the contextual menu, click on Language management
By default, the Configuration page of the site’s languages opens
Click on the Multilingual tab
Choose yes to "Enable the language menu for the articles?"
Click on Submit
Enable multilingual menu for articles

Authors can now choose the language of their article in a list on the Article page.
They have the possiblity to create an article in a language that is different from the main language of the site, as well as the one of the section the article is in.
Thanks to this setting, the article will appear correctly on the public site - with the proper alphabet, a correct orientation (left-to-right or right-to-left), the appropriate format of the dates ...
