What will I learn to do?
SPIP is designed to help people work together and publish an online magazine or other web site.
In order to work together, different users have to carry out different roles or jobs. Each role has a different level of authority. For example, in SPIP, the user type "administrator" has more rights than an "editor"; an editor would not be allowed to change the appearance of the web site.

The people who work together on the site use the private area. The articles, news items and photos they publish will be displayed for their audience on the public site.
This is the Launch pad, the first page you’ll see in the private area.

So the first step in using SPIP is to know how to log in and log out of the private area. When you are logged in, you can work on producing and editing content for the site. You will also be able to see which other users are logged in.
This is what you are going to learn in this lesson.
You will also learn how to take a step that will make it very easy to switch between the public site and the private area.
Then you will see how to set the option for storing your login and password information on your computer.
First, watch the steps
Write the URL of your web site and click enter - you are now at the web site’s public page.

Scroll down to the bottom of the page: you will find "Private area"
Click the "Private area" link
The login page for the private area opens: you will have a user name assigned by the administrator, and a password
Type in your user name, and click "Submit"
The password field appears
Type in your password
Click "Submit"
This lesson works on the assumption that you are logged in as an editor.
If you are logged in as an administrator, you will notice slight differences: for example, there are two additional icons in the Launch pad, Statistics and Configuration.
When you are logged in, the page that loads is called the Launch pad. This is the home page of the private area.

Your display name shows on the bar under the main tools
You can visit the public site again by clicking the top right icon, "Visit the site"
Then, once you are on the public site, click the "Private area" link, and you will come back to the Launch pad without needing to log in again
To access the private area of your SPIP site, you may also type /ecrire at the end of the site’s URL in your browser, and press enter. So, for example: www.myspipsite.com/ecrire.
Ecrire is a French word meaning "to write / compose." SPIP was originally designed by French developers, so you will see some French words in the SPIP coding, no matter which language you use for your interface.
