INSIDE VIEW

In an editorial team, it is necessary to define different responsibility levels and therefore different privileges depending on the assigned responsibility.

In a SPIP site these responsibility levels are represented by roles; each role therefore has different privileges.

In this lesson you will learn:
- Why it is necessary to have different roles to make a website or an online newspaper involving several contributors work successfully
- What the different roles in SPIP are and what responsibilities they have
- Who can modify roles in SPIP

Why have different types of users in SPIP?

Each person has a different skill set and with that comes different responsibilities: in an editorial team, not everybody has the same experience, the same skills or the same degree of commitment with the site editorial work.

Therefore it makes sense that the most experienced and committed journalists should have the highest responsibilities, especially when it comes to publishing an online article.
It would be unwise to grant high privileges to editors who have just joined the team: their contribution on the site should not go unchecked before being published.

This is all the more true when an editorial team gets formed on the web, involving members that are not physically in the same location ; they may not know each other, and they may not be familiar with SPIP.

Thanks to the pre-existing and clearly defined roles in SPIP, a team structure can be quickly put together by using a well proven model. Thus no time is wasted searching for the best structure and organisation to adopt. SPIP roles are designed to ensure that the publishing process is well controlled by those responsible for the site.

What are the two main roles in SPIP ?

In SPIP there are two main roles: Editor and Administrator.

What are the differences as regards the edition and the publication of content online?

DID YOU KNOW?

An author is the person who writes the article, alone or with others. An administrator can therefore also be an author. All contributors to the site content are called authors in SPIP, regardless of their responsibility level.

An editor writes articles and then asks for their publication. An editor cannot publish an online article. This decision is down to an administrator.

An administrator can also write articles and decide to publish online any article, including his/her own.

An editor cannot amend an article if he/she is not the author of that article.
An editor cannot amend an article that is already published, even if he/she is the author of that article.

An administrator can amend any article, whether or not he/she is the author of that article and regardless of its publishing status.

As far as online publishing is concerned, news and reference sites are subject to the same rules as articles: an editor can create/write but not publish whereas an administrator can create and publish any news or reference site.

How are responsibilities shared as regards the forums?

An editor can activate or deactivate the forum associated with his/her article as long as the article is not published. Once the article is published, the editor can’t moderate the forum neither he/she cannot activate or deactivate this forum.

In forums, an administrator can do all the above, whether or not he/she is the author of the articles associated with these forums. He/she can moderate them and activate/deactivate them at any time, regardless of the associated article’s status.

Can an editor configure the site?

Hari is an administrator: Lana an editor:

With the responsibility of online publishing comes access to the "Configuration" module and the "Statistics" module which editors do not have.

For example, in the configuration module an administrator can deactivate the use of news.

Finally, only administrators can create the sections.
Sections represents the different parts that organize the information on your SPIP site.
